Robin van Persie has completed a surprise move on a free transfer

Robin van Persie has re-joined boyhood club Feyenoord on a free transfer, reports talkSPORT. It’s been 14 years since he last played for the Dutch Eredivisie outfit, scoring 21 goals in 76 games between 2001 and 2004.

The former Manchester United striker joined Fenerbahce for £6m in 2015, netting 40 goals in 91 games. He signed for the Turkish Super Lig side in a bid to win the title, but Fener fell short in his two-and-a-half years at the club.

Van Persie’s career started with Excelsior Jeugd before he joined Feyenoord as a youngster. The Dutch international worked his way up the youth ranks before a 2004-move to Arsenal.

He scored an outstanding 131 goals in 276 games before moving to Manchester United in 2012, where he went on to win a Premier League title. For a player boasting over 252 goals, Van Persie may feel he should have won more in his career.

The centre-forward has returned to the club where he started his career. Feyenoord are fifth in the table, 14 points off leaders PSV Eindhoven, but boast an impressive 37 goals in 17 games.

Van Persie would have competition for a starting place, with 11-goal Steven Berguis and seven-goal Nicolai Jorgensen currently enjoying prolific seasons, but the 34-year-old comes off the back of nine goals in 14 league starts so he’s no slouch despite his advancing age.
