‘Lad is a very good player’, Gary Neville urges Man Utd to hijack another key Man City target

Manchester United legend-turned-pundit Gary Neville has urged the Red Devils to gazump Manchester City’s attempt to sign Aymeric Laporte this month. The former France youth international has been a long-time Premier League target, and the Citizens are, for now, favourites to acquire his services.

Neville had a short managerial stint with Valencia between 2015 and 2016 where he had watched the Frenchman playing in close quarters, and he has now urged United to lodge an attempt for his signature, via Twitter.

Laporte only penned a new long-term deal with the Basque outfit last summer, but Pep Guardiola’s side appear intent on triggering his release clause which stands at £60m. United are currently not in a dire need for a new central defender, and Jose Mourinho is likely to bypass the move as he would not want to spend a hefty chunk on a player, who could take time to adapt to the Premier League.

Chris Smalling and Phil Jones have enjoyed a good partnership together in Eric Bailly’s injury absence, but the club are expecting the Ivorian to return to first-team training ahead of United’s Champions League round of 16 first-leg versus Sevilla on the road.
