Good news for Mourinho with 25-year-old ‘still hoping Manchester United will sign him’

According to Sky Sports, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has been given some good news, with Leicester City centre-back Harry Maguire ‘still hoping’ the Red Devils ‘will sign him’ this summer. Mourinho’s search for a stellar central defender led them to Samuel Umtiti of Barcelona, Raphael Varane of Real Madrid and Toby Alderweireld of Tottenham Hotspur, but Maguire might be on his way to Old Trafford after all.

The Leicester man and Bayern’s Jerome Boateng look the closest to signing for United on transfer deadline day and would improve Mourinho’s options at the back. Maguire is coming off the back of a fantastic World Cup campaign with England in Russia and has a lofty asking price which reflects that. Boateng could be available on loan, according to latest reports. The Red Devils aren’t short of options at the back, but they need more class and consistency.

The likes of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo, Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly have struggled in the last 12 months, but there’s no guarantee Maguire will be the man to fix their problems. Leicester are holding firm and say they want to keep the English international. The Foxes appear to be in the market for centre-backs – Filip Benkovic from Dinamo Zagreb and Caglar Soyuncu from Freiburg – but they aren’t willing to let Maguire leave.
