Former Manchester United defender Paul Parker has warned that Romelu Lukaku needs to adapt to life at Old Trafford under Jose Mourinho as quickly as possible.
Manchester United splashed a whopping £75million to acquire the services of Romelu Lukaku from Everton this summer and the arrival of the prolific striker, in theory, should boost the Red Devils’ attacking lineup which looked toothless last season.
However, many are still not convinced that Lukaku has what it takes to succeed at the highest level for Manchester United and some have gone on to claim that the Belgian international is not yet ready to deal with the pressure that comes from playing for a club as big as the Red Devils.
Former United defender Paul Parker has now gone on to echo such doubts regarding Lukaku’s capabilities and has stated that the 24-year-old will need to improve various facets of his game in order to survive at Old Trafford under manager Jose Mourinho.
Parker told 888sport, “You look at Drogba at Chelsea and Milito at Inter Milan and Higuain at Real Madrid. Mourinho likes that kind of player. Lukaku is the one though who will give him more of a challenge because he has to change his game.
“A lot of his game at Everton was good but if he wants to play under Mourinho he has to accept that just because he worked hard in one game he can’t have a rest in the next.
“He’s going to have to work even harder off the ball than on the ball. He can’t play for himself and look to score goals: he has to be a team player and bring people into the game; to learn how to play with his back to goal instead of turning every time.
“If he does that right only then will he be a Mourinho player. If he doesn’t then in a short period of time he’ll be history.”
