Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has expressed his belief that the Red Devils will have to keep winning silverware in order to retain the services of David De Gea.

De Gea, who has been trailed by Real Madrid on several occasions during the past few years, almost left Old Trafford in the summer of 2015 to join the Spanish giants and only a failed paperwork prevented the transfer from taking place.

Since the collapsed move to Madrid, the Spanish international has not looked back and has been a consistent performer in the Manchester United goal, establishing himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the world over the past few seasons.

With only two years remaining in his current deal at United though, Real Madrid are again said to be ready to pursue De Gea and the Spaniard could have his head turned by the defending La Liga and European champions this time around.

Amid the links, teammate Ander Herrera believes that the goalkeeper will extend his contract with the Red Devils but warned the club that they need to keep winning trophies in order to keep his compatriot happy at Old Trafford.

He was quoted by ESPN saying, “I can see him staying here for more years, but we need to win titles to keep him with us. That is what we did last season.

“David is really happy at the moment because we are fighting for everything. We won three titles last season, and the FA Cup the year before, and that is what he wants.

“Real Madrid are going to talk about it every summer because he is the best keeper in the world. But we don’t think we are far from Real Madrid — we won three titles last season, the only English team to do it.

“‘We are going to enjoy having him here and try to keep him at the club for as long as possible. If he is not a legend already, he is not too far away from being one of the legends of the club.”

De Gea is still only 26 and Manchester United need to do all they can in order to retain the services of the superstar custodian for the foreseeable future.
