Arsenal legend-turned-pundit Ian Wright feels Manchester United are the ideal club for Mesut Ozil as they could get the German to ‘light the place up’ with top-notch performances. The 29-year-old is currently playing hardball over negotiations at the Emirates, and he could leave the Gunners between January or the end of the season when his contract expires.
Speaking on Sky Sports, h/t Metro, Wright suggested that United are perfectly set up for a player of Ozil’s calibre, and they could get the very best out of his playmaking abilities, he said: “If Ozil goes somewhere like Manchester United with the players they’ve got on form he will light the place up.
“He’s not the player who when the team’s playing badly – if you’ve got players playing poorly in front of Ozil he’s got nothing to hit and I don’t think Arsene Wenger has got the best out of him consistently up to this point.”
The number 10 position has been a potential weak link for United this campaign with Henrikh Mkhitaryan struggling to maintain his consistency. The Armenian kicked off the season with five assists in the space of three league games, but he has since looked far off from his best form amid concerns of fatigue.
£154,000-a-week player is undoubtedly one of the Premier League’s top performers in the attacking department, and Jose Mourinho would surely consider a reunion, should Arsenal allow his contract run down until next summer.
The World Cup winner is capable of producing delightful passes which opposition defences generally fail to pick, and his potential arrival would no doubt add a spring in United’s step and propel the side to the next level.
