‘I’d genuinely sell him’, Man United fans slam forward after FA Cup final defeat

Manchester United supporters were least impressed with the performance of Marcus Rashford during Saturday’s FA Cup final defeat to Chelsea. The Red Devils came into the game with the better run of league form but they succumbed to a 1-0 defeat after Eden Hazard scored from the penalty spot in the 22 minute.

Following the match, a number of United players were slated for their average showing in the Cup final but Rashford was a particular target for a section of the fans after he failed to create anything upfront. Barring one opportunity against goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois in the second period, Rashford was more or restricted to chances from outside the box before he was substituted for Romelu Lukaku in the 73rd minute.

Both Rashford and Anthony Martial were impressive for United during the first half of the season where they were competing alongside each other for the left-wing position. However, following the turn of the year, the pair had to contend with the additional competition from winter signing Alexis Sanchez and this has pretty much hampered their performances.

Rashford did very little to impress Jose Mourinho during his short stint upfront in Lukaku’s injury absence and his poor positioning and finishing is something which the Portuguese surely needs to resolve prior to the start of the 2018/19 season.

  1. Rashford, and Martial, are subject to a manager not playing to their strengths. They are not out and out wingers. They are not traditional target men. They need balls in the channels to run onto and that is when they get success. Rashford’s only shot was when the ball was played ahead of him and he had a chance to shoot. Wingers/full backs that crosss need accuracy, need to do it quickly and the slow build up play is non typical of United over the years, allows defences to get back and stifles shots. In a word. Boring. Yes, I support United but worse than watching paint dry. Not players but manager who should lead and stop causing aggravation, making sly digs and hurting team spirit
