Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Paul Pogba will play no part in this weekend’s Premier League clash with Everton after being forced off the pitch early in the Champions League opener against Basel.

The Frenchman was handed the captain’s armband for the first time in his United career but unfortunately, he sustained a hamstring injury for which he was substituted midway through the first period. Marouane Fellaini came on as his replacement and scored the opener with a fine header while providing the assist for Marcus Rashford in the second half to seal a 3-0 win.

Speaking to BT Sport (h/t The Express) after the match, Mourinho confirmed that United’s record signing will miss out on the Everton clash, saying: “I don’t know about his injury, it looks like a hamstring to me too. I didn’t speak with him or the medical staff yet but the squad is for this, the squad is for injuries, for suspensions. No Pogba for Sunday? We have Herrera, we have Carrick, we have Matic, we have Fellaini.”

Pogba suffered a similar kind of injury in the 1-0 Europa League triumph over Rostov last term which sidelined him for about two weeks. However, the midfielder was found leaving Old Trafford on crutches and this could potentially be much more severe.

Despite Pogba’s absence, United dominated proceedings against the Swiss champions with the likes of Marouane Fellaini and Romelu Lukaku often posing a threat in the penalty box. Fellaini put in a brilliant man-of-the-match showing with a goal and assist, and he could feature against former club Everton in the Premier League on Sunday.
