Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has stressed that he ‘cannot guarantee’ Nemanja Matic’s participation during Saturday’s late Premier League kick-off at the Emirates Stadium.

The Serbia international is sidelined with a muscle problem sustained during the 4-2 defeat to Watford on Tuesday night, and it appears that the 29-year-old has yet to fully recover from the issue.

In the lead-up to the Gunners clash, Mourinho is unsure whether the Serbia will feature versus the Gunners, although he is part of the travelling party for the weekend’s league game.

“I don’t know if he can play,” he is quoted as saying on United’s official website. “He’s travelling with the team, he’s going to try and hopefully he can, but I cannot guarantee he is ready.”

Since his move from Chelsea, Matic has been ever-present in the United ranks, featuring in all 14 Premier League outings. The Serbian’s absence coincided with United conceding twice against Watford in midweek, and Mourinho will surely want the midfielder back in his XI – although he may not take a risk with the Manchester derby coming up next weekend.

Should Matic miss out, Ander Herrera is pretty much certain to start in central midfield alongside Paul Pogba with Marouane Fellaini still recuperating from a knee injury, he sustained during the week.
