Injury Update: Manchester United defender withdraws from England squad with injury

Phil Jones has been withdrawn from the England national squad with an injury. The 25-year-old is expected to return to Manchester United’s Carrington training base where he will seek to recover from his problem.

According to PA Sport h/t ESPN, the centre-back has been permitted to return to United after the England medical team suggested that it would be the best solution for club and country.

As a result, Jones will miss the final World Cup qualifier games against Slovenia and Lithuania, but the Three Lions are still in pole position to secure the automatic berth for next year’s finals in Russia.

Jones has been a regular fixture under Jose Mourinho this term having kept six clean sheets in seven Premier League appearances.

The manager has previously admitted that Jones has been struggling with a minor ankle problem, and it could well be the reason behind his withdrawal from the Gareth Southgate’s squad.

United will not return to Premier League action until a week on Saturday, and Jones will be hoping to be fully fit by then as they take on Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.

Tottenham Hotspur also make the visit to Old Trafford in the month of October, and the next set of results will give a fair reflection on United’s title credentials.

Manchester United are currently equal on points (16) with table-toppers Manchester City in the Premier League and only trail on goal difference.
