According to surprise reports from Italian outlet Calcio Mercato, Roma are said to be looking to acquire the services of Juan Mata from Manchester United.
Roma lost a true icon at the end of last season after the legendary Francesco Totti decided to hang up his boots and the Giallorossi will surely have an impossible job to fill in the void left by their hero.
The Italian giants have been linked with a host of attacking players during the summer transfer window and they are said to have made several approaches for Leicester City attacker Riyad Mahrez.
However, Roma are not prepared to pay over £25million for Mahrez and with Leicester holding out for a fee closer to £40million, any transfer coming into fruition looks unlikely at the moment.
Therefore, Roma have been forced to look at alternative targets and now reports from Italian Outlet Calcio Mercato have claimed that Eusebio Di Francesco’s side are currently considering a swoop for Manchester United star Juan Mata.
Mata has been a crucial player for United since joining the club from Chelsea back in 2014 for around £37million but the Spaniard’s future at the club has been put into doubt as he enters the final year of his contract at Old Trafford.
While Mata has made it clear that he wants to stay put with United, Roma are said to be looking to test the resolve of the Red Devils and it will be interesting to see how the story pans out.
