Liverpool legend-turned-pundit Jamie Carragher believes Manchester United’s David de Gea is the best shot-stopper in the world. The Spain international has been in splendid form for the Red Devils this term, making crucial saves which have influenced the club’s position in the table.
Thibaut Courtois recently put in a strong performance during Chelsea’s 2-2 draw versus Arsenal at the Emirates, but Carragher did not hesitate to pick De Gea as the world’s best goalkeeper. There have been several debates as to who is the better player between De Gea and Manuel Neuer, but Carragher believes the Premier League has the top-two keepers.
He told Sky Sports, via Sport Review: “De Gea is the best goalkeeper in the world, there’s no doubt about that. But you forget how good [Courtois] is sometimes. Is he the closest to De Gea? I’m not sure if Manuel Neuer is back fit and how he’s doing at Bayern Munich – but we’ve got special goalkeepers in the Premier League – and they are the top two.”
De Gea undoubtedly produced one of the best performances in the English top-flight as he made a record-tying 14 saves during United’s 3-1 win over Arsenal. Aside from this, he has continued to save United’s blushes at the back, including his excellent block to deny Southampton’s Shane Long during the goalless draw at Old Trafford.
The Spaniard has regularly been associated with a move to Real Madrid, but the United faithful will, for now, rejoice having one of the best shot-stoppers of the current generation. The former Atleti graduate is currently contracted until the summer of 2019, with the option of an additional year.
