Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho will reportedly be urged to offload a few players in order to spend on new recruits in the New Year. The 54-year-old has spent £285m in transfer fees on seven players over the past 18 months.

According to BBC Sport, the club’s hierarchy are looking to control the costs prior to providing funds for the winter transfer window. As a result, Mourinho may have to cash in on fringe players with Luke Shaw among the leading candidates to head through the exit door.

Shaw, 22, has managed just two League Cup games for United this term, and his future looks bleak with the likes of Ashley Young, Daley Blind and Matteo Darmian preferred ahead of him for the left-back/ left wing-back spot.

Meanwhile, BBC Sport suggests that Marouane Fellaini could also leave Old Trafford with his deal expiring in less than eight months’ time. The 29-year-old has reached a stalemate over contract negotiations, and his situation is presently attracting interest from Turkish giants Besiktas.

Manchester United endured a difficult run of games prior to the November international break, and this sees them eight points behind fierce rivals Manchester City, who are leading the Premier League standings.
