Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has played down talk of the club making a bid to sign OGC Nice midfielder Jean-Michael Seri before the January transfer window shuts, reports the Metro.
United have been linked with the Ivorian international in the last few weeks, as they look set to lose Michael Carrick to retirement in the summer, while still struggling to agree a deal with Marouane Fellaini.
Seri looked on his way to Barcelona last summer before the move collapsed, but it doesn’t appear he’s on his way out of the Allianz Riviera this month either. Mourinho was keen to quash the reports of a pending approach.
When asked if United would lodge a bid before the window shuts, the 55-year-old replied: “No. I don’t speak about players. Nobody is leaving, nobody is coming. Our transfer market in the summer will be short.”
Manchester United might be in the market for Seri when they resolve Fellaini’s situation, but Mourinho appears content with his options for now. Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera have featured regularly this season, while Fellaini’s been reduced to just three Premier League starts.
In addition to hardly playing, the 30-year-old has endured an injury-hit campaign and is out of contract in the summer, so there’s every chance Seri’s name pops up again in the coming months.
Two midfielders potentially leaving in the summer, coupled with Matic turning 30 later this year, could raise alarms bells for Mourinho. Seri was worth around £36m last summer, so the 26-year-old wouldn’t break the bank.
