Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has confirmed that both Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Phil Jones will make the matchday squad for Sunday’s derby showdown versus Manchester City.
Ibrahimovic, 36, played no part in the games versus Arsenal and CSKA Moscow with the Portuguese tactician opting to rest the Swede, who is still working his way to match fitness.
Meanwhile, Jones has been sidelined since aggravating a thigh injury during England’s 0-0 draw versus Germany, and his return will provide an added boost at the heart of the defence.
Speaking in the lead-up to the Manchester derby, Mourinho revealed that both Ibrahimovic and Jones could feature versus the Citizens, although Marouane Fellaini is expected to have a late fitness test ahead of the derby, he said: “Zlatan is available. Jones is available. Fellaini I have to wait until tomorrow.”
Fellaini is currently recovering from a short-term knee problem, and his potential absence could see Ander Herrera partner Nemanja Matic in midfield, with the latter himself, having recovered from a minor muscular injury.
Meanwhile, United do have a couple of definite absentees with Eric Bailly and Michael Carrick unlikely to feature against the Citizens. Bailly picked up an injury while training with the Ivorian national side last month whilst skipper Carrick is working hard to return to first-team action after having undergone a procedure to resolve an ‘irregular heart rhythm’.
