Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has confirmed that he held fruitful talks with Anthony Martial over his future this summer. The France international has been linked with the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Inter Milan in the transfer window but he appears set to remain at Old Trafford following his brilliant start to the campaign.
Martial struggled to make much of an impression during Mourinho’s first season in-charge as he scored just eight goals across all competitions. However, the 21-year-old showed signs of improvement in pre-season where he managed a goal and three assists, and this form has continued into the new campaign with two goals in as many games.
The Frenchman has been deployed as a regular substitute since the start of the season and Mourinho admits that his player is in the right frame of mind following a conservation over his United future, he said: “We are using him well and he’s coming with the right attitude and we have had conversation about the future he has here. I think he has a good connection on the pitch with Paul [Pogba], with Romelu [Lukaku] it’s coming. He’s growing in confidence and, of course, two periods of 20 minutes and scored two goals, for his confidence nothing [is] better.”
Marcus Rashford struggled to convert a clear-cut chance in the 4-0 triumph over Swansea City, and Mourinho will have the thought of utilising Martial from the off when United host Leicester City in Saturday’s late kickoff versus Leicester City at Old Trafford.
