Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho revealed Ander Herrera and Marcus Rashford missed Sunday’s defeat to Newcastle United through injury, reports the club’s official website.
When asked if Herrera and Rashford’s injuries were serious, the Portuguese coached replied: “I don’t think so, but let’s wait a little bit. When it’s little tweaks in muscles you never know until you know for sure, but it’s not possible for them to play.”
The Red Devils suffered a 1-0 defeat at St James’ Park. They started with Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic as deep-lying midfielders, while Romelu Lukaku led the line up front. The loss leaves them 16 points adrift of leaders Manchester City, while having a depleted side to contend with ahead of their FA Cup meeting next weekend.
Herrera has made only eight Premier League starts for United this season, having struggled to nail down a regular spot in the engine room due to inconsistent form. Rashford has struggled to fend off competition from Anthony Martial, Alexis Sanchez, Jesse Lingard, Lukaku and Zlatan Ibrahimovic for a starting place.
United next travel to the John Smith’s Stadium to face newly-promoted Huddersfield Town in the FA Cup fifth round on Saturday. With the Premier League title looking out of their reach, and having been eliminated in the EFL Cup, Mourinho’s men only have the FA Cup and Champions League to fight for this season.
