Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho said Anthony Martial missed Monday’s Premier League meeting with Crystal Palace due to injury.
The French international, who has featured in 26 of United’s 29 Premier League games this season, was left out of the matchday squad for the trip to Selhurst Park.
Jesse Lingard started in his absence as the Red Devils came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 with just minutes remaining. Marcus Rashford came on in the second half and played his part in the turnaround.
The Manchester United boss didn’t explain what type of injury Martial is suffering with, instead only revealing the player told him he wasn’t up to scratch to play against Palace.
“Injured – I don’t know so well but yesterday he felt he was not ready for the game. We trust in the other players – we never complain. We always say that an injury means an opportunity for another player and, of course, Jesse is a very good player. No problem.” Mourinho said, reports Manchester United’s official website.
Martial, who joined United from AS Monaco in 2015, has scored and created an impressive 14 goals in 16 Premier League starts this season.
He’s been in and out of the team, due to competition from Alexis Sanchez, Rashford, Lingard and Juan Mata, but has played his part in contributing goals when called upon.
Mourinho has a wealth of attacking options in the squad but hasn’t managed to get the best from Alexis since his January move from Arsenal. Martial is having somewhat of a slump too, having failed to score in his last six appearances in all competitions.
