Man United ready to make a shock bid for 29-year-old, £30m could get deal done

Manchester United have emerged as surprise contenders to reacquire the services of Jonny Evans from West Bromwich Albion this winter. The Northern Irishman spent 11 seasons with the Red Devils before pursuing a fresh challenge with the Baggies in the summer of 2015.

The 29-year-old has since settled seamlessly with the West Midlands outfit, and his performances over the past couple of seasons have attracted interest from the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal – both of whom failed with respective bids for the centre-back last summer.

According to The Mirror, United could make a stunning approach to re-sign Evans in the New Year with Eric Bailly likely to spend the next three months on the sidelines courtesy of a surgery on his ankle problem.

Evans was sold during Louis van Gaal’s time in charge at Old Trafford, and Mourinho deems the defender’s sale to be a mistake as he plans to lure him back to United.

The Baggies turned down offers of around £20m for Evans in the summer, but it is suggested that the club could still sanction his sale, should a £30m bid be made by any club during the winter transfer window.

Despite Bailly’s injury, United have done fairly well in the central defensive department with the likes of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo, Victor Lindelof and Daley Blind featuring in the position.

With the competition for places, the central defence is not an area of concern for the moment, and it would come as a surprise if Evans does consider a switch to Old Trafford, where he would once again perform a deputy role.
