Manchester United head coach Jose Mourinho is reportedly said to have given the green light to pursue the signature of Jerome Boateng from Bayern Munich during this summer’s transfer window.
According to Don Balon, the United boss has underlined the need to strengthen the heart of the defence this summer in order to close the gap to Manchester City ahead of the 2018/19 season.
As such, Boateng has been identified as one of the prime candidates in the summer shortlist and Mourinho is keen to see off the competition from Real Madrid to sign the World Cup winner.
At 29, Boateng has established himself as one of the most decorated defenders in the world but the German still has concerns over his fitness which has hampered him in every campaign.
In this regard, United should avoid considering an approach for the centre-back, given the likes of Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Eric Bailly have gone through a similar pattern in recent years.
From the above-mentioned, Bailly certainly looks the player who can establish himself for the long-term but the Ivorian needs to find a fix to his injury concerns, which have seen him make just 56 appearances in his two seasons at the club.
