Jose Mourinho identifies 29-year-old star as the missing piece in his midfield

Rakitic Barcelona

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly eyeing a summer move for Croatian midfielder Ivan Rakitic, who is mulling over his future with Barcelona. The 29-year-old is apparently concerned with his gametime at the Camp Nou following the arrival of Philippe Coutinho.

According to Don Balon, the Catalan giants are said to be preparing for the potential arrival of Antoine Griezmann during the summer, and this could potentially drop Rakitic further down the pecking order, with Coutinho being tipped to play in his position.

As a result, his situation appears to have caught the eye of Mourinho, who has identified him as the missing piece to his midfield combination. The Portuguese tactician has already confirmed that he would prioritise his midfield for the summer with Marouane Fellaini’s departure likely to coincide with Michael Carrick’s retirement.

The likes of Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, and Jorginho have since been associated with the club, but a player of Ivan Rakitic would no doubt boost the centre of the park. The Croatian happened to struggle during the recent Champions League outing versus Chelsea, which was played at a high intensity, but he would still be a quality reinforcement due to his intrinsic passing.
