Jose Mourinho has admitted that Manchester United currently lag behind some of the best teams in the world such as Barcelona in terms of overall quality.
Manchester United have been one of the biggest spenders in Europe over the past few years and the Red Devils have spent heavily during the current transfer window as well, bringing in the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Victor Lindelof for huge money.
United now boast top-class players such as Lukaku, Paul Pogba, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, David De Gea and Juan Mata among others in their squad and on paper, the Red Devils look more than capable of challenging for both the Premier League as well as Champions League titles.
The Manchester United fans are most certainly excited heading into the upcoming season, considering the plethora of big-name players in the squad but nonetheless, manager Jose Mourinho is not getting carried away.
Mourinho has instead admitted that his United side still lag behind the likes of Barcelona in terms of quality and explained that the Red Devils will have to outsmart their tougher rivals through tactical nous rather than pure skill once they square off against the top teams in Europe next season.
He said, “You can try to compensate the difference in quality with a certain tactical organisation. With that you can win in football. It’s possible a team on a certain day is better than the sum of the parts. That’s possible in football.
“But the parts are amazing, their relationship with the ball is amazing, you can argue about occupation of spaces and speak about all of that, but their relationship with the ball is still the most important thing. As an opponent on the bench, like I am, it is beautiful to see their relationship with the ball.”
