Jose Mourinho ‘not pleased’ with attacker’s performance vs Spurs: report

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was reportedly unsatisfied by the performance of Anthony Martial during Wednesday’s Premier League defeat at Tottenham Hotspur. The Red Devils had under-performers throughout the pitch during the 2-0 loss, but the Portuguese was deeply disappointed with Martial for his apparently lack of tackling.

According to The Manchester Evening News, Mourinho is said to have berated the Frenchman’s showing shortly after the game after failing to commit a tackle on the opposition. Tactically, Mourinho appeared to get it wrong against Spurs after he played Martial on the right wing, where he is not entirely comfortable.

Martial had scored in three successive league matches whilst playing on the left side of the attack, and the position allowed him to cut inside with his preferred right foot rather than on his weaker side, which brought little success on Wednesday.

Mourinho can argue that he had tried to compensate for Alexis Sanchez’s arrival, but the Chilean would surely have been a better choice on the right, given his vast experience playing in the position during his time with Barcelona and Udinese.

Irrespective of this, we may expect a few changes in the attack for the Huddersfield game, and both Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard could find themselves on the bench after their relative no-show at the Wembley.
