Manchester United are reportedly planning an approach for Lazio’s Sergej Milinkovic-Savic during the upcoming transfer window. The Red Devils are currently facing uncertainty over the future of Marouane Fellaini, and the Serbian has been identified as a potential target to bolster the central midfield department.
According to The Express, Jose Mourinho is prepared to lodge a £95m bid for the box-to-box midfielder when the transfer window reopens in less than three weeks’ time. Should a deal go through, the Portuguese tactician will have made record bids in successive seasons with Pogba currently the club’s most-expensive recruit at £89.3m from Juventus last year.
With Pogba serving a three-match suspension, Mourinho has stressed the need for an attack-minded central midfielder, and Milinkovic-Savic certainly fits the bill, having contributed an impressive tally of five goals and two assists for Lazio, who are vying for a top-four Serie A finish this term.
Moreover, Mourinho may perhaps be planning for the future with Fellaini reluctant to pen terms over a fresh deal. The Belgium international has not re-entered contractual negotiations since September, and he appears less likely to extend his contract beyond next summer as he is far from guaranteed a regular starting role.
Michael Carrick is also likely to conclude his playing career in the summer, and this leaves space for new recruits to integrate into the squad. Milinkovic-Savic signed a fresh contract with Lazio only in April, and his deal lasts until the summer of 2022.
