Man United have a good chance to sign this midfielder for £31million: reports

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is keen to pursue the services of compatriot Andre Gomes from Barcelona next month. The Portugal international has not fulfilled his early expectations with the Catalan giants, and he has been a regular substitute under manager Ernesto Valverde.

According to Don Balon, Mourinho is hoping to utilise his close association with super-agent Jorge Mendes as he looks to do business with Barcelona for Gomes. The ex-Valencia man had previously been on United’s radar in the summer, and the 54-year-old is eager to revive the club’s pursuit as he aims to reinforce the central midfield.

As per Don Balon, United are planning to make a formal approach for the midfielder in the New Year, and they believe a fee of around £31m would be sufficient to lure him from the Camp Nou. Gomes has seen Paulinho, in particular, push for a regular midfield berth under Valverde, and he has managed just two La Liga starts this term.

Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic are undoubtedly Mourinho’s preferred picks at the heart of the midfield, but there is the need for further reinforcements, considering both Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick look certain to leave Old Trafford in the summer.

Fellaini has been reluctant to ink terms on a fresh contract beyond the current campaign, whilst Carrick is still recovering after a heart procedure, which could end his playing career in the summer.
