Jose Mourinho plotting raid for Spurs’ £50,000-a-week defender: report

Manchester United are reportedly monitoring the developments of Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld with both Phil Jones and Chris Smalling failing to impress under Jose Mourinho this term.

Both Jones and Smalling have received plenty of stick for their away performances against Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United of late, and it appears that Mourinho is willing to part ways with the pair during the summer.

Jones was at fault for scoring an own goal with his poor positioning against Spurs while Smalling contributed towards United’s downfall at St James Park after he conceded a free-kick for a needless dive which was capitalised.

According to The Manchester Evening News, manager Jose Mourinho is tracking the situation of Alderweireld, who has been reluctant to extend his Spurs contract until the club come close to his contract demands.

£50,000-a-week defender, who has recently returned from a hamstring injury, is widely regarded as one of the top-performing centre-backs in the Premier League, and he would undoubtedly add the much-needed experience and resolve at the heart of the United defence.

United have recruited the likes of Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof over the past two summer transfer windows, but there is still a necessity to bolster the central defensive department with the pair yet to find the feet in the Premier League.

While Bailly has struggled with long-term injury concerns during his 18-month spell, Lindelof has yet to acclimatise to the pace of the English game, which has restricted him from being a regular in the first XI.

Marcos Rojo is another option to fulfil the duties, but Mourinho does not seem to trust the Argentine with a regular run in the top-flight. Alderweireld is presently contracted to Spurs until the summer of 2020, and he could yet utilise the big-club interest to buy himself an extension with the north London side.
