Manchester United head coach Jose Mourinho is reportedly prepared to show the exit door to midfielder Juan Mata with Chelsea’s Willian being lined up a suitable replacement. The Brazil international is currently contract with the Blues until the summer of 2020.
According to The Sun, Mourinho is eyeing a reunion with Willian, who he has tried to pursue during last summer’s transfer window. The Portuguese tactician has on many occasions spoken about the Brazilian’s qualities while at Old Trafford, and a fee of around £30m is said to be sufficient to prise away the midfielder from Stamford Bridge.
United pursued the signature of Nemanja Matic from the Blues last summer, and the Serbia international has turned out to be one of the top signings of the Premier League season with his impressive positioning at the heart of the midfield.
Like Matic, Willian is regarded as one of the best attackers in the top-flight, and his performances have been hugely impressive since February, where he has commanded a regular role in the starting lineup.
The 29-year-old showcased one of his best performances during the 1-1 Champions League draw versus Barcelona, and United fans got a glimpse of his ability few days later as he lead the Blues’ counterattack from his own box to score in a 2-1 defeat.
Obviously, Mata has likewise done a credible job from the right wing, but Willian would undoubtedly be an upgrade owing to his ability to contribute in terms of ‘regular’ goals and assists, which the former has not possessed in his kitty this season.
