Jose Mourinho wants £100m-rated star to wear the iconic number 7 shirt

Manchester United have reportedly kept the number 7 shirt vacant with a view to pursuing Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann in the future.

The France international was strongly tipped to join the Red Devils during the summer transfer window before he committed his future to Atleti on a fresh five-year deal.

Griezmann had previously suggested that he had a ‘6/10’ chance of joining United in the summer, but Atleti’s failure to overcome their transfer ban, influenced his decision to stay.

According to The Star, United could make an approach for Griezmann in the New Year with Diego Simeone’s side set to be relieved from the FIFA-imposed transfer embargo.

However, Jose Mourinho’s side are aware that Atleti could oppose a move midway through the season, and this could prolong negotiations until the end of the campaign.

Griezmann’s current deal is said to have a £100m release clause, and United are seemingly prepared to break their transfer record in order to lure the Frenchman to Old Trafford.

The forward wears the number 7 shirt for both club and country, and Griezmann will have the opportunity to take the iconic jersey at the Mancunian giants next season.

Griezmann has notched 83 goals in 163 outings across all competitions for Atletico Madrid to date.
