Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is reportedly prepared to keep Ashley Young at Old Trafford despite the ongoing interest from Stoke City. The England international was sparingly used by the Red Devils last term, making 23 appearances across all competitions.
According to The Mirror, Mourinho will block the impending interest of Young this summer due to his potential to feature in a number of positions including right-back.
The 32-year-old currently has a year left on his existing deal with the option of a 12-month extension, and he looks set to remain at Old Trafford for the upcoming campaign.
Young had been the subject of interest from Chinese club Shandong Luneng during the last summer transfer window, but Mourinho made a similar decision on the player due to United’s participation in the Europa League.
Mourinho has set his sights on making a strong challenge for the Premier League and Champions League titles next term, and Young is considered as the perfect backup option, should an injury crisis arise in the first-team squad.
Young, who earns a weekly wage of £110,000-a-week, is expected to miss the start of the new campaign with a hamstring injury which he sustained in United’s Europa League semi-final clash against Celta Vigo in May.
