Jose Mourinho wants to strengthen these two positions ahead of pre-season

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has reportedly urged Ed Woodward to pursue a new central defender and left-back before the squad embark on their pre-season tour of the United States.

According to M.E.N, the Portuguese tactician is keen on extending the club’s spending spree with two further signings and has instructed Woodward to do the needful before they jet off to Los Angeles on July 15.

Toby Alderweireld and Alex Sandro have been highlighted as the main targets to bolster the United backline over the past month but so far, there has not much progress towards signing either player.

Sandro had been mentioned as one of United’s first summer targets with reports previously suggesting that the left-back could arrive at the club shortly after the FA Cup final against Chelsea.

However, United appear to have since reached an impasse in terms of the negotiations with Juventus supposedly wanting to include Anthony Martial in a potential deal for the Brazilian.

On the other hand, a move for Alderweireld has never kicked off with Spurs’ £70m price tag for the Belgian centre-bacl having dissolved any interest in acquiring his signature.

As things stand, Ashley Young appears likely to remain the club’s first-choice left-back for next season but things could change in the next few weeks, should there be a breakthrough with any other target.
