Antoine Griezmann was linked with the move to Man United, but the transfer will not happen this season; however, Mourinho should wait and get him next year instead of pursuing Alvaro Morata.
The French international has been Man United’s No. 1 target, and if there weren’t for Atletico Madrid’s transfer embargo, Griezmann would already be United’s player. However, the former Real Sociedad man didn’t want to leave his club in a bad position as they can’t bring in new players, so he decided to stay at Vicente Calderon.
While this is a class act from Griezmann, Jose Mourinho and United fans weren’t so happy about it, so the Portuguese manager turned his attention to Romelu Lukaku and Alvaro Morata. When the deal for Morata collapsed, Mourinho bought Lukaku for £75 million because he wasn’t interested in paying £80 million for the player who is not even a starter at Santiago Bernabeu.
Griezmann signed a new contract with Atletico and has a buyout clause of £89 million, but he hasn’t ruled out the move away in the future. “To be honest, I don’t know. I’m going to be here next season, after that we’ll see,” Antoine told Four Four Two last month. “It’s absurd to talk about something more than a year away. I stayed mainly because of the ban. Atletico need me more than ever. It would be dirty to leave. I wouldn’t have been myself or the person that I feel I am today, if I had left the club in that way,” the Frenchman concluded.
It looks like Mourinho gave up on signing Morata and will wait for Griezmann next summer, but in case Antoine decides to quit Vicente Calderon earlier, Mourinho will undoubtedly try to get him already in January.
