Manchester United are reportedly plotting a £25m swoop for Napoli’s Dries Mertens at the end of the season. The Belgium international is being eyed as a possible replacement for Anthony Martial, who could be shown the exit door in the summer.
Mertens, 31, has transformed into a quality goalscorer for Napoli since the start of the previous campaign and during this period, he has netted 45 goals for Maurizio Sarri’s side in the Italian top-flight.
According to The Sun, the Mancunian giants are planning an approach for the former PSV man and they could capitalise on his relatively cheap release clause, which stands at £25m.
Mourinho has previously suggested that he has no plans to reinforcing the attack following the winter arrival of Alexis Sanchez. However, this could all change during the summer, should Martial decide to pursue fresh pastures elsewhere.
Mertens perfectly fits the norm of a Mourinho player with his ability to feature anywhere across the attack but his trailing age could be a cause of concern in a couple of years’ time.
The Belgian would no doubt offer plenty of creativity in the attack front whilst working alongside compatriot Romelu Lukaku but the attacker could drop on his performance levels sooner rather than later.
