Argentine defender Marcos Rojo has revealed that he was in disbelief after Manchester United expressed an interest in pursuing his signature from Portuguese outfit Sporting.

The 27-year-old had come off a strong performance with Argentina at the 2014 World Cup, and this earned him an Old Trafford move under Louis van Gaal, shortly after Patrice Evra’s departure to Juventus

Initially, Rojo struggled to cope with the English game at left-back, but under the guidance of Jose Mourinho, he has transformed into a solid central defender, only for injuries to hamper his progress.

Speaking on the club’s official website, Rojo admitted that he could not his delight after getting the chance to join the Red Devils, who he had followed closely during his younger days.

He said: “I couldn’t believe it. I was celebrating, jumping around the house with my girlfriend. It was incredible, for Manchester United to be interested in me, for it to be so real, it was so exciting.

“When I was a boy all I did was watch football and I would watch the Premier League. I would watch Manchester United because Veron played for them and because of Diego Forlan.”

Rojo was seemingly close to leaving United, prior to Mourinho’s arrival, but the Portuguese tactician has managed to rectify the flaws in the Argentine, to the extent that the fans are desperate to see him paired alongside Eric Bailly in central defence.

Both Phil Jones and Chris Smalling have looked error-prone over the course of the campaign, and Rojo could stay much longer at Old Trafford than the pair after extending his contract earlier in the month.
