Manchester United continued to keep the pace on leaders Manchester City after they grabbed a 1-0 victory over Southampton at St.Mary’s on Saturday. Romelu Lukaku grabbed a 20th-minute winner for the Red Devils, and it was his sixth goal in as many league games this term. United fans were clearly glad by the Belgian’s impact, who has become a huge favourite following his summer move.

Romelu Lukaku cannot stop scoring. Ashley Young brilliant cross. Darmian & Blind take notes.

Who remember when Ronaldo used to score a brace every game? Always knew he'd score. Though not as good, Lukaku gives that feeling

Despite the victory, United will remain second on the table with 16 points after rivals Manchester City bagged a 5-0 win at home to Crystal Palace. Nevertheless, Jose Mourinho is pleased with the way the team coped with Southampton in the second-half after the Saints gave it their all to find an equaliser on the day.
Lukaku now has eight goals across all competitions for United, and he has scored in every game – barring the 2-0 league win over Leicester City last month, where he missed a penalty. The focus will now switch to Champions League football with United having to contend with a 2000-mile trip to Russia to face off against CSKA Moscow on Wednesday night. The European outing could offer opportunities to a few fringe players with Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof possible contenders to start – ahead of Phil Jones and Eric Bailly in central defence.
