Liverpool vs Manchester United in the Premier League might be a couple of weeks away but the Reds have already managed to get one over us in the transfer market.
It’s never a good feeling as Man Utd to see the Merseysiders win in the transfer market or on the pitch.
Transfer: Man Utd table playmaker bid after huge drop in £42.4million asking fee – Report
According to Sport via Paisley Gates, Liverpool are closing in on the signature of the 23-year-old shot-stopper. Valencia have been wanting £34.2m to sell the player this summer but the Reds were only willing to offer £29.8m initially.
Man Utd tried to take advantage of the situation and step in to hijack the deal from under their rivals’ noses. The Red Devils were told that Mamardashvili would be open to joining them should they make an offer that Valencia accept.
However, Liverpool have now upped their offer for the Georgian international effectively blowing Man Utd out of the water. As per today’s edition of Mundo Deportivo via Paisley Gates, the Reds have agreed to close the operation by agreeing to two of Valencia’s conditions.
Liverpool will pay more than £29.8m for the goalkeeper and will let him stay at the Mestalla for another season on loan. The Reds were always looking at Mamardashvili as an Alisson Becker succession plan and hence have agreed to these terms.
Man Utd signed Andre Onana from Inter Milan last summer and should continue to persist with him going forward. Mamardashvili is at a strange stage in his career where he is not ready to be United’s number one but too good to be their number two.
It looks like the 23-year-old will be on Liverpool’s books sooner than later. That effectively shuts out Man Utd’s interest in him for the present and the future and let’s see how the talented Georgian develops at Anfield in the years to come.
