Former Manchester United midfielder Lou Macari believes his former club will benefit from the presence of Alexis Sanchez during the knockout phase of the Champions League.
The Chile international has made a huge impression since his winter switch from the Emirates Stadium, bagging the man of the match against both Yeovil Town and Huddersfield Town – the latter against whom he scored his maiden United goal.
In a report covered by The Manchester Evening News, Macari feels United are in a stronger position to compete for European glory this campaign, now that they possess the mesmerising talents of Sanchez within their ranks.
“What he does for us is add competition for places, which any manager would tell you is fantastic. It sorts of livens up one or two others, and in our case it gives us a better chance in Europe,” he said.
“There wouldn’t be many United supporters before saying there’s an outstanding chance of us winning the Champions League, but when you sign somebody like him it can be the turning point in your season in the biggest competition there is.”
Mourinho is often dubbed as a tactical genius when it comes to the latter stages of the Champions League, and the Portuguese is capable of finding the weaknesses within the opposition which United can exploit.
As such, Sanchez would prove a valuable addition in the starting lineup as he is tireless workrate normally keeps at their feet throughout the game, whilst he is capable of finding the breakthrough in the cagiest of encounters.
Manchester United are not expected to reach the final four of the Champions League, but with a bit of luck and determination throughout the squad, they could pose a threat to the best of sides in the elite competition.
