Manchester United defeated Real Salt Lake 2-1 in the second match of the pre-season thanks to goals from Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Romelu Lukaku, while Antonio Valencia received a red card for a poor challenge on Sebastian Saucedo.

Real Salt Lake’s Luis Silva scored an opening goal in the 20th minute, but United managed to hit the net twice before the break. Lukaku bagged his first goal in the red shirt after a fantastic assist from Mkhitaryan, but Valencia sees red card only 23 minutes after his introduction.

United expected an easy win, but RSL proved to be a worthy sparring partner for the Red Devils even though they played league match only two days before. The back four of Fosu-Mensah, Victor Lindelof, Phil Jones, and Daley Blind had problems to contain the hosts in the first half, which resulted in an early goal for RSL.

Blind particularly struggled at the left-back position, while Lindelof looked assured at the centre-back, but with the entrance of Eric Bailly and Chris Smalling in the second half, United got more security at the back.

Mkhitaryan recorded a goal and assist, while Lukaku showed his cool in front of the goals as he easily rounded the goalkeeper and put the ball into an empty net.

Man Utd first-half team: J Pereira, Jones, Lindelof, Blind, Fosu-Mensah, McTominay, Carrick, Pogba, Lingard, Mkhitaryan, Lukaku.

Man Utd second-half team: Romero, Valencia, Bailly, Darmian, Smalling, Herrera, Fellaini, Martial, Pereira, Mata, Rashford.
