Manchester United have been deal a major blow in their hopes of keeping Anthony Martial, with agent Philippe Lamboley revealing to RMC Sport that the French international “wants to leave” the club and won’t sign a new deal at Old Trafford.
Martial joined United from AS Monaco in 2015 and has gone on to make 136 appearances in all competitions, contributing 62 goals. The 22-year-old shone in his debut season under Louis van Gaal but has struggled for consistency since Jose Mourinho took over in 2016.
The French international, who boasts 18 caps for his country, scored just four goals in 25 games in 2016/17 – Mourinho’s debut campaign. He netted nine in 30 last season but found it hard to nail down a starting place. Martial was substituted on and substituted off in 25 of his 30 Premier League appearances.
Alexis Sanchez was preferred to the 22-year-old on the left side of the United attack, and now Lamboley has admitted Martial wants to leave the club as a result. He said: “After thinking about all the possibilities and scenarios, Anthony wants to leave Manchester United.
“There are many scenarios. For now, it’s premature to talk about it. Anthony will speak later to explain all of this. Manchester United want to extend Anthony’s contract and do not want him to leave, but we have not been able to find an agreement for several months.”
Sky Sports’ Simon Stone says United have no desire to let Martial leave the club this summer, but they will be under pressure if a not of clubs make their interest official – Tottenham Hotspur are certainly keen on his signature.
Martial didn’t make France’s 23-man squad for the World Cup, so he will be available for talks, but supporters won’t be happy if he does depart Old Trafford. Many believe he has the potential to become great.
