According to Record, Manchester United have been dealt a major blow, with Inter Milan closing in on Sporting CP midfielder William Carvalho. The 26-year-old is one of many names to have reportedly been released from their contracts and can be signed on a free transfer as a result.
And although the Nerazzurri could sign the midfielder for nothing this summer, Inter will give Sporting a good-faith payment of £8.9m to help push through the deal for Carvalho and sweeten relations over a court case regarding Joao Mario who joined Inter from Sporting in 2016. Record say Inter could even include one of Yuri Nagatomo, Éder and Yann Karamoh in the deal.
United were linked with Carvalho back in 2016, but their interest this summer doesn’t make much sense. Manager Jose Mourinho recently completed a deal for Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred and looks close to be tying down Marouane Fellaini to a two-year contract extension, so do United need another midfielder?
With Nemanja Matic, Fred, Fellaini, Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba at his disposal, United might have enough depth in the engine room for next season.
