Major blow for Man Utd as deal with Juventus for 28-year-old ‘looks unlikely’

According to the Mirror, Manchester United’s deal with Juventus for Matteo Darmian ‘looks unlikely’ as the Serie A giants are trying to bring Juan Bernat to Turin this summer. Darmian looked set to make the switch from United to Juve after falling down the pecking order under Jose Mourinho, but he may not be completing a move now the Italians are pursuing another transfer target.

Signed from Torino in 2015, Darmian has gone on to make 85 appearances in all competitions for United, winning the League Cup, FA Cup and Europa League. However, he’s fallen out of favour under Mourinho in the last 12 months, making just five Premier League starts last season and has just one year left on his contract.

United don’t want to lose the versatile defender for free next year so they were looking to cash in on Darmian this summer. Juventus lined him up as a replacement for Stephan Lichtsteiner who joined Arsenal, but now it appears a deal won’t happen. The two clubs failed to agree a transfer fee, and now the Serie A champions are instead keen on Bernat from Bayern Munich.
