Manchester United are consistently linked with Dayot Upamecano and an Old Trafford legend has backed the club to secure the signing of the RB Leipzig central defender.
Paul Scholes believes that the Red Devils need to sign a center back to improve things at the back and has urged to lure the French international.
Transfer: Man Utd prepared to agree lucrative terms to sign £2.3million-a-year star – Report
The retired midfielder told BT Sport (via The Sun):
“This is the type of defender I think United need, he’s very different to Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof. He (Upamecano) absolutely loves one-vs-ones, he loves getting down that channel because he knows he’s gonna beat them.
“It’s very much the same as what Rio used to do, what Jaap Stam used to do. It frees the rest of the team to worry about attacking play, because you know you’ve got a centre-half who is going to defend and he’ll do it all day.”
The 22-year-old had an impressive last season with the German club and even started this season strongly. However, in the midweek Champions League contest, the youngster was destroyed, especially by Marcus Rashford, who scored a quick hat-trick on the night.
Man United are currently on top of their group and are firm favorites to qualify for the knock-out stages of the Europe’s elite competition.
After conceding regularly in the first few games, Solskjaer’s men have kept back to back clean sheets, so things look fine but Scholes is absolutely right. We need a leader at the back, someone who will take responsibility to command the defense and ensure consistency.
In such a scenario, should Man Utd move in to sign Dayot Upamecano? At the moment, he is valued at around £55million (The Sun).
