Manchester United found a midfielder alternative in Anderlecht’s Leander Dendoncker in case moves for Matic, Dier, or Nainggolan fail to complete.
The 22-year-old impressed against the Red Devils in the Europa League last season and he scored an equalizer in the first leg 1-1 draw in Brussels. Dendoncker played in 57 matches last year and scored six goals. He is a natural defensive midfielder but can also play centre-back and United will have to fork out between £30 million and £35 million to lure him away from Constant Vanden Stock Stadion.
Anderlecht’s manager Rene Weiler is desperate to keep Leander at the club as he already lost Youri Tielemans this summer to Monaco for £21.63 million and it will do whatever it takes to fend off interest for Dendoncker. However, if the Red Devils fail to sign some of their top midfielder targets, Mourinho could move for the holding midfielder who has four years left on his current contract.
A month ago, Everton expressed an interest in signing Leander but it seems that Ronald Koeman wasn’t prepared to pay a hefty sum to get him. However, that won’t be a problem for Mourinho and Man Utd who have plenty of shopping money, and we could expect a formal approach in the coming days.
Leander Dendoncker started his career in 2012 and appeared in over 120 matches for the Belgian champions, scoring ten goals in the process. He also debuted for the national team in a friendly against France in June 2015 and appeared once again against Estonia in the World Cup qualification game when Belgium crashed the Estonians 8-1.
