Manchester favourite Paul Ince believes the arrival of Alexis Sanchez has had a negative effect on the performances of leading midfielder Paul Pogba. The Chile international joined the Red Devils last month in a swap agreement which saw Henrikh Mkhitaryan move the other way.
In a report covered by The Manchester Evening News, Ince has suggested that Pogba’s ego has taken a hit with Sanchez’s arrival – with the midfielder failing to impress in his recent starts versus Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United.
“Since Sanchez joined the club, Pogba’s confidence and mood seems to have gone in the opposite direction to earlier in the season,” he said. “He looks like a totally different player. It’s probably due to the fact that, pre-Sanchez, he was the main man.
“He was the kingpin and the one everyone was talking about. But the arrival of Sanchez has taken the shine off him. What I would say is, at United, you’re all main men. You should all perform like that, too.”
Ince’s opinion on Pogba does not seem to work out since both players are operating in different areas of the pitch. Moreover, the Frenchman struggled versus Spurs as he could not excel in a deeper role versus the likes of Mousa Dembele and Eric Dier whilst he was deemed to be carrying a knock versus Newcastle.
With Sanchez likely to stick to his preferred left-wing position, the fans would no doubt want to see Pogba getting his due chance on the left-side of a three-man midfield, where he put in his best performance of the campaign at Everton.
