Manchester United legend-turned-pundit Ryan Giggs has been impressed with the progress of attacking duo Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial during the current season. The pair have been in fine form this term, contributing towards 10 of United’s 33 goals across all competitions.
Speaking to Sky Sports h/t ESPN, Giggs has enjoyed the tussle between Rashford and Martial on the left side of the attack. Mourinho has interchanged between the young forwards in the early part of the campaign, but the 43-year-old feels they could play alongside each other in the lineup.
He said: “The battle between Marcus Rashford and Antony Martial has been great to follow. I could definitely see them in the same team, with Marcus being more of a natural centre-forward whereas Martial is more of a left-sided forward but can also play centrally.”
The pair shared 19 goals between themselves during the 2016/17 season, but Giggs feels they will need to up their tally significantly in order to be termed as top-class players, he added: “They’ve got incredible pace so they are extremely dangerous, although to be considered top players they need to be scoring 20 goals a season.”
Martial and Rashford shined together in the 4-1 League Cup triumph over Burton Albion earlier last month, and they could potentially be paired once more when they take Swansea City in the fourth round of the same competition on October 24.
Rashford has been the regular starter in the Premier League this term, but the competition from Martial will keep him on his feet – as any drop in performance levels could see him benched.
