Manchester United could reportedly pursue a new central midfielder this month, now that they have secured a world-class winger in their ranks. The Red Devils landed the services of Alexis Sanchez in a straight swap-agreement with Arsenal on Saturday with Henrikh Mkhitaryan moving the other way.
According to The Independent, Jose Mourinho had wanted a winger, striker and big-name signing this month, and Sanchez has fulfilled the criteria with flying colors. As a result, the club have switched their attention to strengthening the central midfield department with the future of Marouane Fellaini in doubt beyond the summer.
Fellaini has been reluctant to pen terms over a fresh contract beyond June 2018 whilst United are also certain to lose Michael Carrick, who is expected to take up a coaching role under Jose Mourinho from the start of the 2018/19 season.
As the report, Nice’s Jean Michel Seri remains the prime target to bolster the heart of the midfield, but the club are also seemingly confident of striking deals for Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Weigl and Shakhtar Donetsk’s Fred, who is of transfer interest to Manchester City.
Weigl’s club-mate Christian Pulisic had been associated with Mourinho’s side of late, but it appears that the club have stopped the tracking the forward’s progress after pursuing the services of Alexis Sanchez, who will provide a significant boost in the attack front.
United are in a comfortable position with regards to the midfield for the campaign, but the signing of Seri, in particular, could provide an added benefit as the Ivorian remains the only player in the above-mentioned targets, who remains eligible to feature in this season’s Champions League.
Jose, my manager, still the special one!
