Man United could sign £50million-valued full-back but Chelsea has upper hand

Alex Sandro Juventus

Manchester United are apparently behind Chelsea in the race to sign Juventus left-back Alex Sandro in the New Year. The Brazil international had been a prime target for the Premier League holders in the summer, and they are prepared to retain their interest in his services during the winter transfer window.

According to The Sun, the left-sided defender could be on the move this winter with his form having deteriorated during the first-half of the season. Juventus had placed an £80m price tag on Sandro’s head in the summer, but it is suggested that he could be available for a much-lesser sum, although the Brazilian is said to favour a move to Chelsea. Earlier, Telegraph reported that the Old Lady could sell Sandro for just £50million.

Ashley Young has been the first-choice left-back for United for most of the campaign with the likes of Matteo Darmian, Daley Blind and Luke Shaw not getting much of a run in the Premier League. Despite this, the position is not of a major concern with Mourinho recently offering Shaw an opportunity to impress in the starting lineup.

The England international produced his best performance for a long time during the 2-1 Champions League triumph over CSKA Moscow and he has since featured in the midweek win over Bournemouth. United may have to potentially vast sums to pursue a new left-back in January, and Shaw’s participation could offer Mourinho with some leeway to make a transfer decision.
