Manchester United could reportedly discuss a winter deal for Inter Milan’s Joao Mario, should they offer Henrikh Mkhitaryan in a straight exchange deal for the Portugal international. The Red Devils don’t have fond memories of discussions with the Nerazzurri, who refused to budge on their transfer valuation for Ivan Perisic last summer.
According to Italian outfit Corriere dello Sport, both sides could re-enter negotiations during the winter transfer window with Luciano Spalletti looking into a potential deal for Mkhitaryan.
Mkhitaryan has struggled to maintain his consistency during his 18-month spell in the United first-team, and his form of late has been treacherous with Mourinho dropping the Armenian from the matchday squad on occasions.
As per the report, the San Siro outfit are aiming to secure the signature of Mkhitaryan, who they feel could enhance their chances of competing for the Scudetto in the second half of the campaign.
Spalletti’s side have gone winless in the last three league games, but they still remain within seven points behind Napoli, and on course to finish in the Champions League positions.
Should United agree to a move, it is suggested that Spalletti could be willing to offer Mario in a straight swap deal with the Portugal international desperate for regular gametime ahead of next summer’s World Cup.
An attacking midfielder remains one of United’s targets for the current transfer window, and the arrival of Mario could provide some additional versatility in the ranks with the Euro 2016 winner also capable of playing in central and left midfield.
