Manchester United have reportedly reached an impasse in their negotiations to sign Toby Alderweireld from Tottenham Hotspur this summer.
United boss Jose Mourinho is keen on pursuing a centre-back with experience in the transfer window and Alderweireld has been earmarked as the leading option amid his contract standoff with Spurs.
According to Evening Standard, United thought that they could reach an agreement for Alderweireld with a £55m offer on the table but Spurs are supposedly said to want more for the Belgium international.
Despite this, Mourinho’s side are said to have verbally agreed on a five-year deal with the versatile defender and they are prepared to pay more than the £120,000 weekly wage offered in Spurs’ latest offer.
Alderweireld’s current deal is only due to expire in June 2020 but he could be available for just £25m next summer, if a fresh contract is not agreed, and this could push Spurs to sanction his departure in the present transfer window.
Meanwhile, there has been the talk of Anthony Martial being offered as a makeweight in a proposed move for Alderweireld but United have made it clear that the attacker has a long-term future at Old Trafford regardless of his restricted gametime in the backend of last season.

Man U has 3 developable players that have been rejected by Mourinho but would be of interest to Spurs.: Martial , Pogba, Rashford. If Woodward offers one of those 3 as make weight- there’s a good chance a deal will happen. I expect Woodward to stall & prevaricate until either someone else snaps up Alderweireld or he signs a new deal with Spurs.
