Recently, Record came up with a headline ‘Reds buy Spanish pass’ indicating the 21-year-old will seal a permanent move to the Eagles.
Alvaro Fernandez permanent exit to Benfica would mark the start to one of the busiest summers at United. While left back has been a problem position for the Old Trafford outfit this season, releasing the academy graduate would be a statement.
The 21 year-old Spaniard joined Man Utd on a free transfer from Real Madrid in 2020, and he has yet to slot into the first team. As such, a deal of £5.1m to the Portuguese side would be a good business.
United have had well-documented injury crises involving left backs this season. Tyrell Malacia has been out for the whole season, and Luke Shaw has only played 12 Premier matches, missing the rest through injuries.
As such, jettisoning Alvaro to Benfica would be purely a statement of intent to what will be a busy transfer window. However, there is no denying that selling players, especially defenders, at a young age may come to haunt United in future.
In the current campaign, so far, the youngster has made 13 appearances in the Liga Nos for the Portuguese giants.
The twenty-time champions of England are poised to have an overhaul of the squad this summer. This owes to new co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who is stamping his authority on transfers.
Ratcliffe has already made top level appointments at the club, which should now pave way for player transfers.
