Manchester United’s weakest department is their midfield. Ole has not reinforced the central/defensive midfield since his appointment and he must sign a top player to reinforce the positions in the next transfer window.
Former Manchester United star and current Aston Villa player, Ashley Young, has backed Man Utd to secure the signing of Italian international Marco Verratti.
Transfer: Man United prepared to secure £250,000 a week star’s exit – Report
The 36-year-old veteran told BBC Radio Five Live:
“The Michael Carrick type has been missing for years. They haven’t gone out and replaced Michael Carrick. Don’t get me wrong – Fred and McTominay are good players but I don’t think there’s a Michael Carrick around.”
“I was watching the PSG v City game yesterday and I think Marco Verratti is the closest one and nobody’s gone out to test the water to try to sign him. I think he would be an unbelievable signing for Manchester United.”
The 28-year-old is one of the best midfield players in the world. He can effectively be deployed as a play breaker and excels in the deep lying playmaker role as well. The Azzurri star was a key member of the Italy side that won the European Championships in the summer.
Verratti has won every major domestic prize with Paris Saint-Germain multiple times. The only major problem is that in the past year and a half, the 47-capped star has been in and out of the squad due to consistent knee concerns. Man Utd surely do not need an injury prone player.
Even in the current campaign, he has missed majority of the games due to injury and has only made three appearances thus far. His current contract with the Ligue 1 leaders will expire in 2024 and he earns around £203,000-a-week (via The Sun).
In your view, who should Man Utd sign to improve the midfield department?
